Understanding your energy bill
The numbers to find before you compare prices.
Find the period and meter readings
Check the dates covered and whether readings are actual, smart-meter readings or estimates. An estimated bill can differ from your real consumption. If a reading looks wrong, check it with your supplier rather than assuming the price itself is wrong.
Separate usage from rates
Usage is measured in kilowatt hours, or kWh. The unit rate is the price of each kWh; the standing charge is a separate daily cost. Gas meter readings may use different units and are converted to kWh on the bill. Use the bill’s kWh figures for comparisons, not raw gas-meter numbers.
Understand payments and balances
A Direct Debit is money paid into your energy account. Charges are the cost of the energy and standing charges for the billing period. Credit or debt reflects the difference, together with adjustments. Dividing one month’s payment by your usage will not reliably tell you the tariff rate.
Make a comparison checklist
Note the tariff name, annual kWh for each fuel, unit rates, standing charges, payment method, meter type, contract end date and exit fees. Keep account numbers and bank details private. Wiso does not need your full bill to let you browse the directory.
If something does not add up
Contact your supplier with the bill period and the item you do not understand. Ask it to explain the calculation or correct the reading. If you need independent help, use Citizens Advice or the consumer advice service for your nation.
